Why Compost?
Many people are familiar with the term composting but are unsure of the reasons why we compost. The truth is, there are many reasons why people compost and why we as a society must all compost to ensure a healthy environment for generations to come.
Why use landfills when we can compost?
Composting is an excellent way to reduce the amount of stuff taken to
landfills. Why? Because approximately 50% of landfills are currently made up
of food and garden wastes. Although landfills are improving their systems so
that they minimize their negative impact on the earth, they are still
releasing harmful toxins into our ground, water and air. Landfills also
require a lot of land to sustain their operations and as our population on
earth grows, less and less land is available for this purpose.
Why else should we compost?
Composting is the most natural and most effective way to regenerate soils
with nutrients and water retaining characteristics, while improving its
overall structure and aeration. By composting our food and yard wastes and
using this humus-like compost in our gardening and agriculture, we improve
soil fertility and stimulate healthy root growth, without the use of
chemical fertilizers which are harmful to all species (human, plant and
animal).
Why compost helps prevent pollution and environmental destruction…
Compost is highly effective at cleaning up contaminated soils by binding to,
degrading or eliminating toxins. Through these acts of binding, degradation
and elimination, compost prevents pollutants in storm water runoff from
reaching other valuable resources and it prevents erosion and silting of
water bodies as well as turf loss surrounding roadsides, hillsides and
public sporting fields.
Why compost offers financial incentives…
By reducing the need for chemical fertilizers, pesticides and water, compost
saves agricultural industries money. Compost can also be sold to landfills
as a cheaper substitute to existing landfill covers while reducing odors and
increasing the breakdown of landfill materials. Composting also reduces the
need to transport materials to landfills and process them there – a service
which is becoming increasingly expensive for governments and businesses.
Why compost? Why not?
Composting is inexpensive and less costly than servicing traditional
landfills. The act of composting and the end product (compost) lead to
numerous environmental benefits that positively affect every level of
society, from individuals, businesses, governments and of course, Mother
Nature herself. Composting is a sustainable solution for much of the world's
waste. Why wouldn't we want to compost?
