Build a Compost
Everyone can compost. All you need to do is buy the type of composter
best suited to your needs or alternatively learn how to build a composter.
The truth is that there are many different ways to build composts. How you
build your composter depends on your needs, the amount of money you wish to
invest and your construction abilities.
How to build a basic backyard compost
If you have a backyard and the space to dedicate to a compost heap, all you
need are food scraps and yard waste to get started. Ideally how you would
build your compost is over a soiled or grassy patch to take advantage of the
worms and natural microorganisms that assist in breaking down organic waste.
The exposure to soil rather than concrete will also help to drain excess
liquids from the pile. It is preferable to build your compost heap in a
sun-exposed area to generate a higher temperature for the pile since heat is
another key factor in the decomposition of wastes. How you protect your
compost heap is equally important because you do not want to expose it to
wet weather conditions nor attract animals. A tarpaulin secured with brinks
or stones may do the trick or you may want to invest a little more and opt
for an enclosed compost bin.
How to build a compost bin
How you build your composter depends on the materials you have to build it
with. Some people build their composter with different types of strong mesh
wiring, others with wooden crates or some combination of 2x4s and mesh
wiring. If this is how you wish to build your compost, materials shouldn't
cost more than $100 to buy. Alternatively, there are many plastic composters
for sale that require some assembly and range in price from $50-150.
