How it Works...

Composting is a relatively simple process depending on the type of composter you work with to create compost. In the simplest of forms, a composter can be any medium-sized bin that collects various types of food scraps and slowly decomposes over time to make compost. These basic composters tend to create stronger odors and excessive liquids that must be separated from the pile to permit proper breakdown of compostables.

How composting works outdoors

More sophisticated composting techniques are used to work with large outdoor composters. Backyard composters work relatively efficiently but require more work to manage. Working with outdoor composters requires monitoring the amounts and types of organic wastes contributed to the pile as well as the frequency by which one rotates the pile. A commonly accepted ratio for composting success is 30:1 garden waste (carbon-based inputs) to food waste (nitrogen-based inputs). This organic waste combination layered properly and rotated periodically works better than simplistic composters because its structure produces optimal amounts of moisture and bacterial cultures and allows for proper aeration.

Composting indoors is no work at all!

Indoor composters are the simplest and most sophisticated composters to work with, especially if you are living in an apartment or condominium. Indoor composters are designed to fit under your sink or in an alternative spot of convenience. Simply follow the basic instructions provided with your selected indoor composter and let the composter do the work. Very little maintenance or monitoring is required and you won't have to deal with unpleasant odors either! Simply cook the foods you love, share food wastes with your composter and watch it create rich compost for you in return.
