Composting FAQ
Got a composting question? Below is a helpful list of answers.
What is composting?
Composting is the decomposition of organic materials to make a dark,
earth-like substance called compost.
What is compost?
Compost is organic material that can be used as a medium to grow plants or
as a soil amendment to help condition the soil and replenish nutrients.
Why should I compost? Doesn't food waste breakdown in landfills?
Composting is an excellent way to recycle much of our household waste and
reduce the volume of garbage disposed of in landfills. Although food can
break down in a landfill setting, it takes a very long time as a result of
deep, mixed materials layering, insufficient air circulation and excessive
water levels.
What is more, no additional value is gained from the decomposition process
in the way that compost is used to grow new life and regenerate soil. On the
contrary, the combination of materials dumped in landfills leaches toxins
into the ground and releases methane gas when decomposing, a global warming
gas over 20x more powerful than CO2.
How does indoor composting work?
When preparing meals, chop up compostable organic wastes (see list below)
into 1-2 inch pieces and add to the composter. Insert a batch of composting
condos balancer, close the lid and turn the crank three times. Every 6-8
weeks, remove the catchment tray and transfer fresh compost to your garden
or storage bin for future use.
What can be composted indoors?
Green (Nitrogen-based)
Raw fruits and vegetables (including peels, stems etc.)
Coffee grounds, filters and tea bags
Egg shells (rinse first)
Nut shells
Dried flowers/plant leaves
Brown (Carbon-based)
Dryer and vacuum cleaner lint
Hair and fur
Fireplace ashes
Non-recyclable tissues, napkins, paper towels.
Doesn't the process of composting smell bad?
No. In fact, your typical garbage will usually smell worse than an indoor
composter. Minor compost odors resemble the smell of dirt, mushrooms and
natural fresh foods.
How do I use the compost I have created?
1. Liven up your apartment with healthy potted plants.
2. Transform your concrete balcony into a lush urban garden
3. Grow an herb garden in your kitchen
4. Contribute to the landscaping of your condo building
5. Create a green roof or community garden in your neighborhood
6. Donate soil to a local non-profit involved in community gardening
7. Donate soil to vendors at your local farmer´s market
8. Sprinkle over any soil or grass patch
