Worms & Compost
Composting with worms, also known as vermicomposting is a popular way to
compost, at least amongst those that are not squeamish about worms living in
their kitchen. Composting with worms in an affordable and relatively
effortless way to compost your kitchen scraps.
What types of worms compost and how?
The key is to buy lots of Red Earthworms or Red Wigglers as they are the
types of worms that prefer composter conditions and decaying vegetation. In
fact, these types of worms can eat up to their own body weight in food each
day. In the case of worm composting, the composting process is straight
forward. Insert food scraps and the worms eat them, break them down and
excrete worm castings (aka worm humus or worm compost). It is important that
you do not add new food overtop of the partially broken down food, but
rather, place it in a separate area of the composting bin.
What type of compost bin do you use for worm composting?
Whether you use a plastic bin or wooden crate to create your composting bin,
the container must have air holes to allow oxygen into the bin as well as
some form of drainage for the liquid compost (also known as compost tea).
The composting container must also have a layer of shredded newspaper
bedding to create optimal conditions (the worms will eat both the bedding
and food waste to create compost).
The trickiest part about vermicomposting is harvesting the compost once it
has been created. As far as this goes, you have two choices. You can wait
until the worms have processed all the contents of the bin and then transfer
the 50-100 worms into a holding container while you make use of your
compost. Alternatively, you can design your worm composter to be a
continuous, uninterrupted system.
A continuous system is somewhat more sophisticated and involves stacking
bins or crates vertically to allow worms to travel upwards once the waste in
the bottom tray has been processed. Worms will seek out food naturally so
this design will allow you to access the compost in the bottom tray without
having to separate as many worms from the batch.
