Composters
Home composters have been around for a long time, however they have
traditionally been restricted to large outdoor composters which require a
backyard for starters as well as significant space. These conventional
composters are effective in creating compost but they require a good deal of
attention and manual labour.
Backyard composters have acquired a bad reputation for being stinky and
although this is true in many cases, this characteristic is not true of all
composters. The most common cause of odorous composters is neglect. People
tend to be good at filling up the composter with food and yard waste but
neglect to turn it periodically so that all contents are exposed to oxygen
and optimal temperatures.
Traditional composters come in 4 varieties: an open-air composter (a.k.a. a
compost pile on the ground), the large rectangular prism composter, the
rounded tumbler and the worm-friendly composter, also known as
vermicomposting. The only difference between the open pile and the
rectangular standard in the encasing. Both require manual shovelling to
rotate. The rounded tumbler on the other hand allows you to contain the
compostables while rotating the whole composter on a hinge. Finally, the
vermi-composter provides a simple home for redworms to go to work breaking
down organic wastes via consumption and excretion.
Thankfully, in the last few years, indoor composting has been made more
accessible and manageable by companies like Composting Condos. This is great
news for the enormous segment of the population living in apartment
buildings and condominiums and is vital for the well-being of society as a
whole. If everyone used composters to recycle their food, and garden waste
products, we could achieve an approximate reduction of 50% in landfill waste
which means less gas consumption to get it there, less energy consumption to
manage it and less toxic byproducts spreading into our air, land and water.
