Compost Uses
Compost is a valuable resource that can be used by individuals,
communities, industries and the environment as a whole. Unfortunately, some
people don't compost because they don't know what they will use the compost
for once they have created it. Below are some helpful suggestions for ways
that you can make use of your home-made compost.
Use your compost in your home and garden
Compost is a rich soil that is great for potting plants and flowers in your
apartment or condo. If you're an avid cook, why not treat yourself to an
herb garden in your kitchen. If you have a balcony, even better! Use your
freshly made compost to grow a lush balcony garden filled with all your
favorite plants and greenery. If you use compost in your gardening, your
soil will be rich with nutrients, retain water more effectively and promote
strong root growth.
Let the community use your compost
If gardening isn't your thing, many community groups and non-profit
organizations that would love to accept your compost donations. In fact,
community gardens are becoming more and more popular in urban settings and
if you're looking for a fun introduction to gardening, you might consider
getting more actively involved with one. Many governments are eagerly
encouraging further development in this area by way of funding and/or land
dedication so keep it in mind if you should be interested in starting up a
garden project at your apartment building, condo or local park.
Use your compost regardless of your interest in gardening
If you do not have a desire to use your compost for any particular gardening
project, don't let that discourage you from composting and putting your
compost to use. All you need to do is fill up a container with your
home-made compost and take it with you on a walk. Within minutes you will
find a grassy patch or flower bed that would gladly welcome the benefits of
using your compost. Just sprinkle it around and forget about it.
Environmental uses for your compost
Composting is an easy and essential way to divert good waste from landfills.
By using our food and yard waste to create compost instead of disposing of
it with the rest of our garbage, we are reducing the amount of energy used
to transport waste to landfills as well as the amount of harmful toxins
released into our ground, air, and water (a common byproduct of our landfill
system). Composting allows us to create a more sustainable consumption cycle
by using our organic ¨waste¨ to regenerate soils and grow new life instead
of wasting these resources away.
